Boundaries

The inner-city neighborhoods of Surry Hills and Darlinghurst sit on the city’s western edge, while Kings Cross (the nightclub and red light area) is on the eastern edge. The eastern suburbs begin roughly 1 km (½ mile) east of Kings Cross at the lovely harborside suburbs of Elizabeth Bay and Rushcutters Bay. They extend northeast along the harbor shoreline to Watsons Bay and South Head (the southern entrance to Sydney Harbour). From there the area stretches south for about 15 km (9 miles) along the oceanfront to Coogee. While this area between the ocean and the harbor is densely populated, there is still plenty of open space, including the huge Centennial Park. The eastern suburbs have six harbor and six ocean beaches.
